Coil is an advanced movement of the hips, first descrbed by Ted Williams, that maximizes the hips' travel, and thus the Efficiency of a hitter's swing. That allows hitters to hit for both power and average. Coil is most easily seen in the swings of Ted Williams, Roberto Clemente, Bryce Harper, and Fernando Tatis Jr.
Coil was first discussed by Ted Williams in his book The Science of Hitting, where he referrs to it as "Hip Cock." However, for reasons of Internet profanity filters, the movement Ted Williams referred to is now generally referred to as "Coil."
